The two main types of hosting you’ll find when looking around are shared and reseller hosting. Both types of accounts are honestly similar, with one major difference. With shared hosting you generally only have one account and you share resources with all other accounts on the server. With reseller hosting you buy a larger chunk of a shared server and resell those resources to your customers.
Even if you don’t know the first thing about server administration you can delight in the benefits of a reseller account. With this setup the host takes care of keeping the server and all server-related software up to date. If you have a problem all you need to do is contact their support and let them deal with it.
If you just have a single website then you won’t have any advantages by going with a reseller package. If, but, you have a number of sites that you host you can generally save quite a bit of money, as buying hosting in larger parts is generally cheaper.
This can also be the inexpensive first step towards owning your own hosting business. Some of todays largest hosts started as resellers. With this setup all you need to do is find customers and provide end-user support for them without having to deal with any server problems.
Since the host you got the account from will be maintaining the server, you won’t need to be staying up all night dealing with problems. And any issues you have you should also be able to get help with.
Potential clients may not be fully satisfied buying a hosting account from a reseller, because you, essentially, are the middle man. If a problem happens with the server or a customer’s account, they need to contact you and if you are unable to deal with the problem yourself, you would in turn have to involve your host. This can be a lengthy process from initially receiving the first support request to getting the problem resolved. But, if you have competent customer support in place this shouldn’t be a major problem.
As a reseller, like I said previously, you have limited access to administration functions, and if you have familiarity with the control panel and server software you may find this annoying. The only thing I can propose is asking the host if it would be possible for them to enable your account more with administrator privileges. The worst thing the host can say is ‘no’, so it’s worth a try.
If you’re new to hosting, or maybe are a designer looking to add to your bottom line, reseller hosting can be a fantastic option. Without needing to risk a lot you can have your very own hosting company up and running.
