I had read alot of reviews on various websites and found that I was fairly well armed in terms of troubleshooting, but had no real problems in connecting to the web interface (just change the ip of one of your pc's to match the default ip of the unit-like the directions say) and when I changed the ip setting on the unit to "assign automatically" to match my network config, it was a little challenging to log back into the interface (after changing my pc's setting back to assign ip automatically) cuz I had to start at the first ip in our router's range and keep entering each next ip until I got to the one that had been assigned to the unit by my router but luckily it was the third ip i tried. after that it was pretty easy to config the unit and install the printer on my xp, but for my 2000 I had to add the ip of the unit to my trusted zone on my firewall before it would work. If I had any tips for anyone, I would say to open the pdf manual for the unit and keep it alongside the quickstart directions as it has more helpful detail. Just finished installing it and haven't put much traffic through it yet, but so far so good.
Several months later and it still works great, we've had zero problems. only thing is that the USB, LPT1 and LPT2 lights don't work on ours.

The DP300U setup is convoluted. You need to disconnect one of your network PC's from the network, connecting the printer through the print server to that PC and then change its IP configuration to match the default of the DP300U in order to change to your own network configuration plan. That was ok, BUT, you can't print from a DOS application to your printer. I was using XP Pro w/an HP 4L and there are instructions on how to use the "net use" command to make use of lpt1 or 2 but it doesn't work. It's nice that they have a voice help line available. It would be nicer if they plain 'fessed up to the fact that it doen't work the way they have designed their print server. First it was call the hardware company (HP). Then it must be an error with the Win XP Pro software and finally it was "we don't support that issue here at the help line". That was close to "it really doesn't work with DOS" but it would have been nice if the documentation didn't lead you to believe otherwise. This admission came after a panicked conference with the second level who wouldn't come to the phone but was clearly calling the shots. Guys, just say you constructed the thing without regard to DOS. My HP2500 Color laser w/internal print server can be accessed as lpt1 from my setup but not the D-Link DP 300U (i. e. no problem with HP or WinXP). What to do? Ahah!! Put a manual switch between the printer and the D-Link Print Server. Leave the network connected to the printer until you need to use it in DOS mode, flip the switch, the same print properties setup will print to the monochrome printer and all is well. I know the older conventional wisdom was don't put manual switches between PC's and laser printers, but this has worked for me and the HP4L for years (knock on wood) in other configurations as well.

This print server came with sketchy instructions and took many hours to set up. I eventually got it working with 2 printers for about 1 month. Then it went kaput. I cannot get the thing to work now (and I didn't change a thing re: configuration). I spent hours on the phone on hold for customer service and the only live person I did speak with couldn't help me. This sucks and I'm returning it. In contrast, I have a Linksys wireless router and am extremely pleased.

It's a wonder people can still get away with putting out product so hard to install. I spent 2 hours getting the XP side to work, then waded through the 98 side for another 2 - back to compusa for my 15% restocking fee. Don't buy this thing.

This router has great wireless performance and range. I live in a 5000 sq. ft. home and the router is in the basement, yet I get excellent signal quality throughout the house.

It is also easy to setup while having every conceivable option for configuring the security and accessibility of the LAN.

I bought this by accident and didn't realize that it wasn't "mac compatible", but it turns out happily, that it *very* much is. I plugged it in to my network, asked by router what DHCP addresses it had doled out, went to the one that wasn't my laptop in Firefox and there's the config screen! Set the IP address, and I chose JetDirect for the network printer type and plugged in the IP address, set the printer driver and voila, working printer!

I got a PS101 after having very good luck with a similar D-Link DP-101P+ pocket print server. We use Macs, which the setup software does not support.

No problem with the DP-101P, just used the Web Admin feature. The D-Link had a default IP address and was easy to connect to with a web browser. One-time setup with a fixed IP address. My only complaint is that the D-Link has no way to tell you what the new IP address is if you forget it. Some print servers have a button which will print a settings page when the print server is connected to a printer. There is also no reset button to return to factory defaults. Write the new IP address on the DP-101P itself so you have it handy.

The Netgear PS101 is another story.
1. As with the DP-101P, there is no button to print out settings, and no reset button. Even though the manual refers to a "diagnostic button" (print settings/reset button), which some other Netgear print servers have, there is not one.

2. The default IP address does not come with the manual.
The manual does not mention a default IP address. Instead it says the PS101 can come up with an IP address in a certain range:
"When NETGEAR PS101 Print Server is without an IP address . . . and there is no DHCP server to automatically get an IP address, it will self-assign a unique IP address. The address range is from 169. 254. 0. 1 to 169. 254. 254. 254"
However support says there is a default IP address of 192. 168. 0. 150.

3. BUT . . .
you can only use the default IP address if you are not connected to a router (network) which assigns an IP address. My web browser could not access the PS101 at the default IP address when connected directly to it (computer to PS101 via ethernet cable), although that might work for some.

The networks I have used normally assign computers an IP address by DHCP. This is great for computers, but does not work well for a print server. The PS101 comes setup to get an IP address by DHCP. So if you connect the PS101 to a network to use Web Admin, you cannot connect until you figure out what IP address it got assigned. Very unfriendly.

4. Changing settings via web admin would not work.
Netgear has some odd terminology. "Reset" in the Web Admin means upload new setting that you have set and "saved" in the Web Admin screens. When I clicked on reset I lost my web connection to the PS101, so maybe it did reset. I have not been able to tell if this works, because . . .

5. If you unplug the PS101 it reverts to the factory default settings. So it loses the fixed IP address you just assigned. For my purposes this effectively means I cannot use it with a fixed IP address. As noted by H. Oh in another review:
"Unplugging the cord will rest the unit to the factory default.
It means that you have to set it again on every power interruption.
A never-heard-concept in IT industry!! "

This is ridiculous.

The workaround seems to be to set your network's router to always assign the same IP address to the PS101 via DHCP. This involves specifying the PS101's MAC address in the router setup so the router knows when the PS101 turns up on the network.

Netgear support spent a lot of time with me but was not able to explain the above problems or help me get the setup done. The PS101 may work OK if you have a Windows computer and can run the Netgear Setup Wizard, but even then the reset on losing power makes this a poor choice.

Good luck.

Netgear support spent a lot of time with me but was not able to clarify the above problems or help me get the setup done. The PS101 may work OK if you have a Windows computer and can run the Netgear Setup Wizard, but even then the reset on losing power makes this a poor choice.

Excellent luck.
